is part of a number
of initiatives aimed at encouraging reduction in the number of single
occupancy vehicle movements to and from the Park.
Car sharing can contribute to reduced road congestion, ease demand on
limited car parking and reduced environmental damage by staff getting
to and from work.
Recent AA figures reveal that the true cost of driving an average 1000cc
car doing
43 miles/gallon is 31p/mile and for a 2000cc car this figure rises to
59p/mile. The cost includes petrol, excise duty, service, repairs and
depreciation.
| Some Questions
and Answers |
|
|
I don't drive
and usually catch the bus. Can I join the scheme? |
|
|
At this stage
the scheme is only open to car drivers. The primary aim of
the scheme is to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles
commuting to the Park. |
|
|
Where do I
park the car? |
|
|
The driver
of the car will be expected to park the car in their company car
park. This is to ensure fairness in the use of parking as well as
the benefit to each company's car park. |
|
|
Can I still
car share if I work shifts/flexi-time? |
|
|
Yes, the scheme
is designed to be flexible and will try and put you in touch with
people working similar hours. |
|
|
If I am a
car share passenger and I have to go home in an emergency, what
happens? |
|
|
If there is
no suitable alternative and you are registered as an active Smartways
car share member, your company as a supporter of the scheme*, has
undertaken to send you home in a taxi, free of charge. Remember
to let your driver know that you have gone home. |
|
|
What happens
if I am the driver and I am ill? |
|
|
You must contact
your car share partner(s) as soon as possible, so that they can
make alternative arrangements. |
|
|
What if after
a few weeks I find that car sharing doesn't suit me? |
|
|
By taking
part in the Smartways Car Share Scheme you are not committed to
the scheme. All you need to do is terminate any arrangements that
you have made with your car share partners. If they need a new sharer
they can contact the Scheme administrator on 01244 675019 or e-mail
carshare@chesterbusinesspark.com.
|
|
|
I only have
the use of the car occasionally. Can I still car share? |
|
|
Yes, we will
try and match you with other drivers who are in the same situation
as you. |
|
|
What is the
registration information used for? |
|
|
The information
submitted by you is completely confidential and used only for matching
in the Smartways Car Share Scheme. The only information released
to potential matches is your name, telephone number and company.
Release of any further information is entirely up to you once you
contact your potential match.
Smartways does not sell, trade or rent your personal information
to others. The registration information supplied by you will only
be used for car sharing purposes on Chester Business Park. |
|
|
Who controls
the personal information? |
|
|
Any personal
information provided by participants is controlled by the Smartways
Car Share Scheme which is entirely separate and independent of Park
occupiers. |
What is car sharing?
Car sharing is when two or more people travel to work together instead
of in separate
cars. It can take place on a regular or occasional basis and is entirely
voluntary.
Car sharers may alternate vehicles to share the cost or use a single
vehicle and contribute
to the running costs.
| Car
sharing tips for success |
 |
Schedule
a meeting |
| When
matched have an initial meeting before the first trip to discuss
insurance, communications and personal preferences. |
 |
Determine
your route and schedule |
| Establish
the morning pick-up points and designated place(s) to meet for the
trip home. |
 |
Establish
the ground rules |
| Smoking
or non-smoking, music, eating or drinking, car temperature etc.
Agree on waiting times and side trips. |
 |
Draw
up a schedule for driving responsibilities |
| If
all members of your car share alternate driving, decide amongst
yourselves if you wish to alternate daily, weekly, monthly etc. |
 |
Establish
a method for reimbursing car expenses |
| If
the members of your car share do not share the driving equally,
come to an understanding of how the costs will be shared and agree
on payment dates. If everyone shares driving equally, there may
not be a need to exchange money. |
 |
Be
punctual |
| Decide
how long the driver is expected to wait. |
 |
Be
courteous |
| Do
not sound your horn when waiting for passengers. |
 |
Establish
a chain of communication |
| If
a driver is ill or will not be going to work one day, an alternative
driver should be notified (if available) to ensure that other members
of the car share will have a ride. If a passenger is ill or will
not be working, the driver should be contacted. Compile a telephone
list for all members and agree on notification procedures. |
 |
Respect
individual preferences |
| Do
not feel that you have to talk to your fellow car sharers. This
is particularly true in the morning when some people like a bit
of quiet time. |
 |
Consider
starting out on a trial basis |
| Try
car sharing for a month or two, or one or two days a week or every
day. Agree to reconsider your arrangements if they do not appear
to be working. |
 |
Keep
your car in good condition |
| A
dirty and/or unreliable car can spoil your car share and the scheme
as a whole. |
Personal security
when car sharing is an extremely important issue. These simple guidelines
should be followed when car sharing:-
 |
Always
meet in a public place such as work reception |
 |
Always
let someone else know with whom you are car sharing, and of your
time schedule for collection and destination. |
 |
Passengers
should request the driver to provide the make, model, colour and
registration number of their car. Do not get into the car if
these do not correspond to the information given. |
 |
You
are under no obligation to get into the car with, or offer a lift
to, any other person. You do so entirely at your own risk. |
 |
Report
any problems/bad experiences/incidents or comments to the scheme
administrator as soon as possible. |

 |
In order to
provide this service we request certain personal information |
| from
you which we will use for car sharing purposes only. Once information
is matched only a telephone number, name and company is released
to potential car sharers. |
 |
You
are responsible for the accuracy and truthfulness of such information. |
 |
We
do not verify details provided by participants and cannot accept
|
| liability
for the acts, defaults or character of participants. |
 |
Any
misconduct or misuse of the information will result in the offender's |
|
name being immediately removed from the car share database. |
 |
Your
car must be comprehensively insured, taxed and if appropriate |
|
have a valid MOT certificate. It is advisable to let your insurance
company know that you are registered with a car share scheme but
this should not incur additional costs. Most insurance policies
will cover you to carry passengers on your journey to and from work,
as long as you do not charge your passengers more than the running
cost of the vehicle and do not make a profit. |
 |
The
driver is under no obligation to wait if the passenger is late.
